Coffee, a precious and indispensable beverage for the entire Western world, no longer exists. Intensive exploitation of plantations and labor, combined with the relentless march of climate change, has brought about the near-complete depletion of this valuable resource, with epochal consequences for its global network of consumers.

From this dystopia/alternate history, the artists Hombre Collettivo, Caterina Marino, and Benedetta Parisi take their cue to offer the audience of Per-Forma, in the evocative halls of Palazzo De Grazia, a unique installative and performative journey. Four guides from the near future will lead us through a path that traces the recent catastrophe of coffee’s end back to its origins, exploring the long era of its dissemination and traveling through its entire production, historical, and sentimental journey.

Broadcast live from a dystopian future, the researchers of Hombre Collettivo investigate the economic and environmental causes that led to the rise of coffee, its peak dissemination, and ultimately its inexorable disappearance. What lesson can humanity (of today, in the year 2075) draw from the trajectory of coffee, a beverage that symbolized an entire culture, a whole world now devoted to extinction?

The Scientific and Sentimental Archive of Coffee is part of the Museum’s Permanent Collection. Thanks to donations from around the world and extensive research, it now comprises items spanning different eras, allowing us to reconstruct the long and troubled history of this product. The guide will lead the audience through the Archive, seeking to answer the question: “Who made the coffee?” It will be a journey into the past, discovering distant lands, professions that no longer exist, and moments of life long forgotten.

What's left?

“What's Left?” is an installation within M.M.MOCA that recreates a café, a space that disappeared after the Great Crisis, symbolizing a lost era. The room is sparse: empty tables, cups stained with substances we no longer recognize, and no one to serve them. At the heart of the experience are the conversations, audible through headphones, which tell fragments of imaginary lives and memories connected to the café. Guided only by these sounds, visitors imagine a vanished daily life, transforming the space into a place for reflection on what remains of a collective ritual now lost.
